How Safe is Your Tattoo Studio?
How Safe is Your Tattoo Studio?

Used to be you could get a tattoo by someone you knew by just going to their house or their studio after hours. But because the risk of cross contamination and the government making new policies to track and keep things more regulated, that’s a thing of the past. I’m a tattoo lover; I have some of my own, so I know that when I go into a tattoo studio I expect the best service and the safest and cleanest equipment and environment; I’m probably not alone in that sense.

There are some basic things one should know about tattoo studios, when going find a tattoo studio. Do you already have a tattoo studio you use on a regular basis? If so, do you know what to look for to see if they are operating according to federal guidelines and regulations? You should be aware and look for these things to make sure.
You should first know that all states, of course, incorporate different laws; make sure you find out what they are for tattoo studio’s so you can check to see if your tattoo studio is operating like they should be. You can find this information out by checking with your state office and looking online to find out what their rules are.

Make sure your tattoo studio is licensed and has their license in a visible spot where it can be seen by clients. Check the dates and make sure that the studio is keeping their license renewed every year. Look around and see how clean and organized the tattoo studio is, making sure the studio is disinfected and sanitized often. Also make note of the kind of disinfectants that are used, keeping mind that the disinfectant should be EPA approved.

This is an obvious point, but one I’ll state nonetheless, watch the artists. Are they operating safely, opening sealed packages for each new client.

Pay attention to your gut feeling about the artist, do you relate to them and find them easy to talk to and work with?

How does the artist handle their equipment and the client? These are very important things to consider. Does the tattoo studio use autoclave to sterilize their tools and equipment, the needles and hoses and do they have an autoclave certificate in clear view? If they don’t you should run! You want to look and make sure that each package of equipment is sealed until use for the current client and hasn’t been opened prior to use on the client. Always ask the artists to open the sterile package in plain site so you can see for yourself that the package has never been open prior to use. And most importantly is to check to see that all sharp items are stored in a biohazard container.

You may not have given it much though before now about how your tattoo studio does things, but now that you know, check it out and see just how safe your tattoo studio is before getting inked there again.
